Langgaard's Europe

Karlsruhe

There was apparently a certain interest in Danish avant-garde music in Karlsruhe at the beginning of the 1920's. Carl Nielsen was received with great enthusiasm when in March 1923 he gave a concert here, which included his 4th Symphony, and Langgaard's most advanced orchestral works were performed for the first time in Karlsruhe, and were given a great deal of attention. This was the case with Sfærernes Musik (Music of the Spheres), which was performed for the first time on 26.11.1921, and Symphony No. 6 (later entitled Det Himmelrivende (The Heaven-Rending)).

Langgaard's own copy of the programme for the first performance of Symphony No. 6 (at that time designated No. 5) in Karlsruhe on 15.1.1923. The work was received with
rapturous enthusiasm.

The day after the first performance of Symphony No. 6, Langgaard gave a piano evening in the Künstlerhaus in Karlsruhe. There was only one work on the programme, Psalmen des Abgrunds, a precursor of Afgrundsmusik (Music of the Abyss), though it must have been considerably longer than the latter, which only lasts 15 minutes.
As a matter of interest, Langgaard never visited Karlsruhe again.
